201MAPA: Setting Up a LinkedIn Account
As part of this module, further engagement with the professional media landscape was important in order to gain more insight into future career prospects as well as to allow me to progress further into my eventual goal of becoming a media professional.
As part of this further engagement, I set up a LinkedIn account. The purpose behind this was to have a platform where I could begin to build networks with media professionals and to find information about areas of media (such as PR) that I am interested in.
The first step in creating this profile was to create a professional email address as this would allow me to separate professional messages from personal mail and would give a platform for those seeking to contact me to do so.
Next, I entered information on my education, including that I am currently a student at Coventry University studying BA Media and Communications.
Additionally, I added an introduction paragraph as well as selecting skills which I believe I possess.
To support these skills, I decided to partake in LinkedIn’s skills assessments to show that I have genuine experience with these skills. As a result, I earned a LinkedIn skills badge in Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Word.
Moreover, for skills which I have not yet earned a badge in, such as Adobe Premiere Pro, I am using various techniques to expand my knowledge on these. These methods include additional practice on these areas by creating more projects, using tutorials on sites such as YouTube, and using guides created by developers. Eventually, I plan to use sites such as LinkedIn Learning or Skillshare to take classes on these skills as well as many more, however as I am currently a student, I am opting to use free tutorials for the time being as these learning sites cost a regular fee.
